Anyone know if the Basic lineup includes the HD channels of these local stations? I currently use an outdoor antenna to pickup the stations and most of the time I have no issues. Whenever its cloudy/raining, the signal is weak. $17 seems like a fair price to pay, but only if its HD.

nevermind, just saw the local HD channels at the end of Digital Basic. With all broadcast going digital this month, what exactly will the Basic be? Digital 480i?

Actually, the digital transition will more than likely now be June 12th.
And which prices are right? I still see on the LUS website that the Digital Basic is $46.44 and the digital plus is $58.31, while this list shows these as $51.44 and $63.31. Which one is correct?
And I really hope they add more HD channels by the time service is offered in my area (Phase 2). I'm a hockey fan and I can't live without Versus HD or the NHL Network, which don't appear in the lineup under any tier.

If the transition is voted on to be postponed until June, stations still have the option to stick to the original date. What a mess it will be if the date is postponed. There are so many commercials and fliers advertising the February date, its going to confuse people even more if the date is pushed.

So who is your favorite NHL team?

YEAAAAAAA! Competition to the "Single Source" monopolies at last. Lets see if they can compete!
Everyone talks about "free enterprise" when there is none, now lets hear from them.

The HD channel lineup is, at best, disappointing. I'm not in Lafayette right now, but my parents are, and I suspect the minimal HD content will push my Dad back to Dish Network or DirectTV.

If Video is really the key to success, then they have a long way to go. At this point, if I was in Lafayette, I'd get the Broadband and maybe the basic phone service. I'd get Satellite video and put up an antenna for HD locals.

As it stands, it doesn't even look like most premiums are available in HD.

Hope they can get it ramped up soon....for my parents, they'll probably end up on a SAT service for a year...after the contract is up, they can reevaluate.

Re: HD channels

Huval, in comments at the Advertiser clarifies that;

"If you purchase our Digital Basic service, you will receive the HD version of any channels we carry in our Basic and Expanded Basic tiers. As things stand today, that would include about 33 HD channels as part of our Digital Basic service."

"The number of those HD channels will increase as we add more HD channels for programming originally found in our Basic and Expanded Basic tiers. There will be no additional charges to you any of these HD channels."

Apparenly that is clearer on the official list on their website.

Also...re HBO-HD & other premium channel:
"This is just the beginning. It won't be long before we have other channels, including HBO-HD and many others."

@ monkeyboy, Re basic/analog video on LUS after the digital transition whenever it might finally occur:

Things will be unchanged on LUS after the digital transition. Little know fact is that LUS is all-IP during transport. The box on the side of your house receives all digital signals and then, for basic/non-settop box customers translates your selections to analog. So from the point of view of your house nothing changes. LUS will just have one less transform at their end.

@ Anon, re which prices are right"

Both. :-)

One set includes the ($50 set top box rental, the other doesn't.

From Huval:
"Our prices did not go up. For the purposes of this announcement we included the $5 per month rental of the set top box in the price for the service (the set top box rental was not included in the prices shown on our website). We really want to keep our pricing structures as easy to understand as possible. As time goes on, we'll continue working on ways to reduce the mystery on how product prices are set."

@John,

Regarding the Basic tier video service, are you saying that the video will be converted to analog by the box outside of my house? Even if I have an HDTV, the Basic channels will come in as analog? I guess Im sticking with my homemade Gray-Hoverman antenna.

11:44 PM, February 07, 2009
Blogger John said...

Monkeyboy...

No. :-)

If you only buy a service that doesn't come with a box--sans set top box--only then will your signal will be transformed for those channels.

That transform won't take place if you get the box. This is so a service can be sold that doesn't require a set top box rental.

It's weird but its what I've been told.

And ... ok, I'll bite. I googled the antenna and it looks neat. Did you really make one? If so what do you get...tell all. Here or over at Lafayette Tech?

monkeyboy,
Detroit Red Wings have always been my favorite team. I'm glad I chose them as they've won so many championships :-)
And Kevin, I agree about the lack of HD being disappointing (as I hinted at in my previous comment). I have been aggravated with Cox with their slow releases of more HD channels, although I didn't want to get into a contract with satellite as I knew LUS would be opening up soon. I'm also going to do exactly what you said with switching my internet and phone but waiting with cable until they get the channels I care about. As it is, I mainly watch 7-10 channels, so if I don't have all of them then I'm not switching yet.
John, thanks for the info for the pricing. I didn't see that anywhere so I must not have read everything. I thought it was odd that both packages were 5 dollars more, but I have to have DVR so I'd be looking at that price anyway.

Cox Sports as not listed as a HD station. According to a statement above, it will be included since it is offered in expanded basic.

It's not that I don't trust the gubment, but, I want to see it in writing before I switch. Cox Sports will carry the LSU games next year and no HD is a deal breaker.

It didn't cost much to type the channel listings on the LUS website. Shouldn't cost much to do it right and specifically list the channels that are being offered.
